Staying Legal

North Carolina law requires all vehicles with a valid North Carolina registration to have continuous car insurance that is provided by an insurance company licensed to do business in the state. The law also requires coverage for the following: minimum bodily injury property damage limits, and uninsured or underinsured motorists.

The bare financial coverage is as follows:

  • Bodily Injury (one person) - $30,000
  • Bodily Injury (two or more people) - $60,000
  • Property Damage - $25,000

North Carolina strictly enforces their insurance laws, and your insurance company is required to notify the state if insurance has been canceled or if coverage lapses. If you’re caught driving without insurance, the penalties and fees can be extremely costly.

Good Driver Discounts – This type of discount is usually extended to drivers who have a good driving record.

Accident-Free Discounts  Some insurance companies will offer a discount to those drivers who have not had a single accident on their record.

Homeowner Discounts – These types of discounts are offered to homeowners.

Good Student Discounts – Young adults generally have higher insurance rates than people over the age of 25. Some auto insurance companies will extend a discount to students who have a good grade point average.

Military & Veterans – A handful of insurance companies will offer a discount to military members and veterans. Be sure to let your insurance broker know that you are current or ex-military when you provide them with your personal information.

Do I need full coverage or just liability if I bought a new car?

If you leased or financed your car, there is an excellent chance that you need full coverage auto insurance. Keep in mind that even if you’re not legally obligated to carry full coverage, you should consider extra coverage. If an uninsured motorist hits your car and you don’t have uninsured motorist insurance, you’re the one who will pay the repair and/or medical bills.

How are auto insurance rates in North Carolina determined?

There are several factors that auto insurance companies take into consideration when providing you with a quote. They can include:

  • Age
  • Marital status
  • Driving record
  • Type of car you drive
  • Credit score
  • Zip code where you live
  • How you will use the car
  • Prior liability limits you have carried
  • Prior company rating

Will my credit score affect my car insurance rates?

Yes! Your credit score definitely has an effect on the rates of your car insurance. Even if you have poor credit, contact us and we’ll be able to find you coverage.
